Report: Sergi Roberto’s agent in talks with Manchester City; Guardiola notes it “a lot”
FC Barcelona defender Sergi Roberto’s agent is said to be in talks with Manchester City over a possible transfer.
Speak on the transfer window podcastJournalist Duncan Castles says representatives of the Spain international have been in contact with the Premier League champions over a possible move this summer.
According to Castles, Pep Guardiola rates Roberto “a lot” and is a big fan of the 29-year-old’s “flexibility” on the pitch. The Barcelona ace started his career as a central midfielder but has since grown into a right-back. Ronald Koeman used him in both positions last season.
The Man City / Barcelona merry-go-round
Indeed, Manchester City and Barcelona seem to be doing a lot of business this summer. Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia have already made the switch of this window. Plus, reports indicate that this is just the beginning.
As reported by Sport, Aymeric Laporte is eager to move on to the Catalan giants. While Mundo Deportivo complaint that Joao Cancelo wants a transfer to Barcelona, with Roberto a player who could be offered as part of a trade. The 29-year-old has a Transfer market worth £ 16.2million.
Athletic also reports that Bernardo Silva was the subject of Barcelona interest last summer. The City playmaker was keen to move to Spain. However, a transfer failed late.
Roberto could be a crafty signing for Manchester City
While the prospect of signing a 29-year-old from a degrading Barcelona side may not look appealing on paper, Roberto could be a solid addition to City’s squad for next season.
As Castles mentions, Guardiola is a fan of players who can play in more than one position. And with Roberto accomplished in two roles, the Spain international is a perfect name to join City’s ranks.
Indeed, his relationship with Guardiola during their time at Barcelona means Roberto could hit the ground running at City. And with Cancelo and Silva potentially on the way, the 29-year-old would be a two-in-one replacement for the duo.
