Columbia Acorn European Fund Celebrates 10th Anniversary as Morningstar’s Top Peer Fund
BOSTON–(COMMERCIAL THREAD) – Columbia Threadneedle Investments today announced that the Columbia Acorn European Fund has celebrated its 10th anniversary. Since its inception, the fund has outperformed its competitors and is ranked as the best performing fund of the decade in Morningstar’s Europe Equity category.
Rated 5 stars overall by Morningstar, the Columbia Acorn European Fund (Institutional Category) is designed to target long-term growth by investing in small and mid-cap European companies with attractive growth potential.
The Institutional 2 share class of Columbia Acorn European Fund also won a Lipper Fund award in the US in 2021 for “Best 5-year performance” in the European Region Fund category of 17 funds.
With 23 years of investment experience, Stephen Kusmierczak has managed the fund since its inception. Kusmierczak and his co-manager Sébastien Pigeon are looking for companies that offer a high return on capital and the ability to maintain those above-average returns over long periods of time. They believe that the quality of management and seniority, exceptional cultures and committed ownership are important factors that lead to the sustainability of high financial returns.
“This type of information is often difficult and expensive to acquire, but allows long-term investors who are deeply focused on the fundamentals of the business to develop an advantage,” said Kusmierczak.
“We believe that the opportunities for outperformance in the European small and mid-cap space are sustainable, as MiFID II has shifted the coverage of securities on the sell side to large-cap stocks or research paid by issuers. Our team relies on regular meetings with peers, suppliers and middle managers of a company on the ground in Europe to identify large companies and own them for many years, ”said Pigeon.
In addition to the two fund managers, the fund’s investment team has a dedicated team of investment and risk analysts. Together, the team is fluent in nine languages and has an average of 16 years of European investment experience. Through a collaborative, bottom-up, research-driven process, the team identifies quality growth companies that are underappreciated, with above-average sustainable growth relative to the local market and industry peers. The fund generally owns between 40 and 60 companies.

Investment risks – Market risk can affect a single issuer, a single sector of the economy, industry or the market as a whole. Morningstar percentile rankings are based on the average annual total returns of funds in the category for the periods shown. They do not include sales charges or redemption charges but include operating costs and the reinvestment of dividends and distributions of capital gains. The rankings of the share classes vary due to different expenses. If sales charges or redemption fees were included, the total returns would be lower.
For each fund with at least three years of history, Morningstar calculates a Morningstar Rating ™ used to rank the fund against other funds in the same category. It is calculated on the basis of a Morningstar risk-adjusted return measure that takes into account the variation in the monthly excess performance of a fund, without any adjustment for charges (entry, deferred or redemption fees). , with more emphasis on downward variations and rewarding consistent performance. Exchange-traded funds and open-ended mutual funds are considered a single population for comparison purposes. The top 10% of funds in each category receive 5 stars, the next 22.5% receive 4 stars, the next 35% receive 3 stars, the next 22.5% receive 2 stars, and the bottom 10% receive 1 star. (Each share class is counted as a fraction of a fund within this scale and rated separately, which may cause slight variations in the payout percentages.) A fund’s overall Morningstar Rating is derived from a weighted average of the performance numbers associated with its three, five and ten year Morningstar rating measures (if applicable).
